In This Fight, Global Warming is a Wimp

The Whole World Has Gone Green Mad
What do the fight against poverty during the Great Depression, the Space Race, the construction of our railroads, and the eradication of polio all get compared to in Time’s new Special Report? The fight against Global Warming of course!
That’s right, when author Bryan Walsh pens phrases like “…a war of the first order…” and “ [the] most patriotic struggle of all,” he isn’t talking about the war against Islamo-fascism, the war on drugs, or even the war on poverty. No, he is referring to the war on…greenhouse gases? That is worrisome. Of course this is all predicated on
pseudo-science and a steadfast belief that humans are causing global warming. I would go into why I believe that human-caused global warming is a hoax, but as many have said, including Richard Stengel, the managing editor of Time; “the debate is over.”
Before demeaning the U.S. for not ratifying (under Bill Clinton) the Kyoto treaty, a treaty he calls “flawed,” he says that “The U.S. produces nearly a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gases each year…” Since 95% of the green-house effect is caused by water vapor, and water vapor is of 99.999% natural origin, I’m wondering just where those numbers come from.
Maybe he is referring to the estimated .28% of greenhouse gases attributed to human activity. Okay then; we in the U.S. are directly responsible for one quarter of .28% of all greenhouse gases (roughly .07%). The question is; what do we do now! EEEEK!
Number one, says Mr. Walsh, is not to encourage people to use less, voluntarily, but to “Price the Sky,” or tax the crap out of carbon emissions, making people use less by force. "Carbon Credit" could be short for "communism" except it has more letters (though the same number of syllables). The letters, however, do spell redic rob cant, which may mean “continue to steal” in Latin, but I’m not sure.
I could continue to berate Mr. Walsh for pages and pages (truthfully – this is merely a rebuttal of the first page in his article), but I will end here and hope that you are not amongst the duped when it comes to man-made global warming, or amongst the frightened who think we are all doomed because of a one degree increase over 100 years. You have nothing to fear but environmentalism…like it or not.

Environmentalism is a Religion

I laugh, hard, when liberals tell me that they are scared of religious people. Environmentalism is not only a religion, but also the newest form of communism, socialism, and progressivism; one with a smiley face instead of brown shirts or black shirts. That, is scary.
The following attributes of the current environmental movement have convinced me be that  it is in fact a religion and that good Christians cannot simultaneously be good Environmentalists:

God/Omnipotent being/Life giverGaia, Mother Nature, Mother Earth

Dogma: The Gaia hypothesis

Place of Worship: Everywhere, anywhere, anytime. You are always in the church of the Earth.

Holy book: An Inconvenient Truth, coupled with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),

Holy men/women: Al Gore, Ted Danson, Ted Turner, Bonnie Rait, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, PETA, willing politicians, teachers who preach the faith, The United Nations and countless others.

Followers: Environmentalists and those who have been made to feel guilty for their very existence. The media, world governments, world citizens, liberals and democrats, the uninformed and even the unwilling.

Holy Day: Earth Day, celebrated on the March equinox by the United Nations, and/or April 22.

Sin: Carbon emissions, littering, pollution, Styrofoam, pesticides, “waste,” doubt/debate, chemicals, nuclear power, oil, pharmaceuticals, procreation

Penance Taxes, fines, imprisonment, carbon credits, procreation limits, recycling, and overall green living (hybrid cars, less travel, lowering heat or a.c., and much more).

One ofthe most devastating effects of this religion, so far, has to be the millions killed by malaria because of the banning of DDT, due to pseudo-science, hyped information, scare tactics, and the love of animals over people. Iain Murray just wrote a book on 6 more catastrophes caused by the followers of this underground religion.
I am not saying that you can’t be a Christian and be a good steward of the earth; it’s your duty. But you cannot be a Christian and an Environmentalist…like it or not.
I’m not alone:

History of Democrats on Blacks in America

AN INTERESTING HISTORY LESSON:

-         In 1850, Democrats passed the Fugitive Slave Law, making the mere accusation of being a runaway slave reason to deny habeas corpus and legal representation (about 11% of all blacks were actually free). This law also paid judges $10 for a conviction, or for the “return” of a slave, $5 if the person was set free.
- In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by Democrats, allowing slaves to be imported into the territories.
- Disgusted with the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, Free-Soilers and anti-slavery members of the Whig and Democratic parties founded the Republican Party in 1854.
- After denouncing slavery, elderly Republican Senator Charles Sumner was beaten nearly to death while he was reading in his office by Democrat Representative Preston Brooks in 1856.
- In 1858, while debating Republican Abraham Lincoln on slavery, Democrat Senator Stephen A. Douglas said, "For one, I am opposed to negro citizenship in any and every form. I believe this government was made on the white basis. I believe it was made by white men for the benefit of white men and their posterity forever, and I am in favor of confining citizenship to white men, men of European birth and descent, instead of conferring it upon negroes, Indians and other inferior races."
- In 1863, Republican President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
- In 1865, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was passed, forever banning slavery in the US. It received the votes of 100% of Republicans (88 out of 88 in the House, 30 out of 30 in the Senate), while only getting 23% of the Democrat votes (16 out of 66 in the House, 3 out of 8 in the Senate).
- In 1867, the Texas Republican Party was formed...by 150 blacks and 20 whites.
- In 1868, the 14th Amendment was passed, granting the newly freed slaves equal rights. It was supported by every single voting Republican (128 of 134, 6 not voting, in the House, and 30 of 32, 2 not voting, in the Senate), but none of the 36 House Democrats nor any of the 6 Senate Democrats voted for it.
- In 1870, the 15th Amendment was passed, guaranteeing black the right to vote. Every single Republican voted for it, every single Democrat voted against it.
- In the 1872 congressional investigations, Democrats admitted forming the Ku Klux Klan as a means to fight against the spread of the Republican Party.
- Between 1870 and 1875, Republicans passed many pro-black civil rights laws, but when Democrats took strong control of the House in 1892, they repealed all the civil rights laws, allowing southern states to implement the Jim Crow laws.
- In 1913, Democrat President Woodrow Wilson reintroduced segregation throughout the federal government. He named avowed racists like Josephus Daniels and Albert Burleson to his cabinet.
- FDR's first Supreme Court nominee was a life member of the KKK (Senator Hugo Black, Democrat from Alabama).
- In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed, gaining the vote of only 64% of Democrats (153 for, 91 against in the House, 46 for, 21 against in the Senate), while gaining support of 80% of Republicans (136 for, 35 against in the House, 27 for, 6 against in the Senate).
- In 1993, Democrat President William Jefferson Clinton presented a signatory of "Southern Manifesto", Democrat Senator William Fullbright, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
- The only currently elected federal official to be a Klansman is a Democrat (Robert Byrd, D-WV).
- To this very day, Democrats continue to contend that blacks are inherently inferior. So inferior that they think that blacks require a 20 point bonus (out of 120 possible points) on their college admissions scores simply because they are black. Others feel that blacks are so stupid that they are unable to speak proper English, and must be taught in "Ebonics" in school.

-They continue to support an organization -- Planned Parenthood -- that was founded by a person who believed "colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated" (Margaret Sanger- a devout eugenicist).  Since 1974, abortion has killed more blacks than AIDS, violent crimes, accidents, cancer, and heart disease…combined.

Most of these facts are well known amongst devout conservatives, so sourcing them is a hard thing to do. You will find a lot of it repeated on the websites below, but I don't know if any of the information is owned by anyone.  I researched most of this on the web after I heard about it from other bloggers.  I think this is the most linked collection you will find. With a half-black candidate running on the Democratic ticket, there will be even more tension amongst blacks and conservatives. It is important that the facts are laid our clearly.  Republicans are now, and have always been, the party for Blacks in America.  Thank God for that.

Do You Have to be a Socialist to be a Democrat?

I read an interesting article this week in Forbes magazine, entitled Bad Medicine, by David Whelan. It talked about failing hospitals in the United States and what little is being done to help the situation, as far as government is concerned.

According to the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths:  “[You are] five times more likely to die from visiting a hospital than from not having health insurance.”
Don’t get me wrong, the last thing I want is for government to get involved in healthcare. What I want is for them to STOP getting involved in healthcare.

Specialty Hospital: A center that focuses on the care of a particular body part, such as the heart, spine, or joints, or on a specific disease, such as cancer.

Currently there are 60,000 hospitals overall in the United States, and only 200 specialty hospitals, however, according to Forbes:

The University of Iowa did a study and found that “complication rates are 40% lower for hip and knee surgeries at specialty hospitals than at big community hospitals.”

Medicare says that “patients of all types are four times as likely to die in a full service hospital after orthopedic surgery as they would after the same procedure in a specialty hospital.

HealthGrades, a quality review firm that ranks hospitals by their complication and morality rates explains that three of the nation’s top ten cardiac programs are specialty hospitals, and three of the top ten hospitals in the U.S. for joint replacement are specialty hospitals.

Apparently, these numbers just aren’t good enough for the hypocrites in D.C., who have repeatedly blocked the expansion of these specialty hospitals, at the behest of wealthy lobbying firms representing corporate hospitals across the U.S. In 2003, “congress effectively banned new physician-owned specialty hospitals,” according to Forbes.

Representative Fortney “Pete” Stark Jr., Democrat-CA, said that “[These doctors] (referring to doctors who own specialty hospitals) make enough money.”

You’re right Pete, doctors making a lot of money, who ever heard of such a thing? Scandalous. We should punish these greedy s.o.b.’s, regardless if it hurts patients, diminishes competition, and adds to your socialist agenda…like it or not.

The Incredible, Edible...Corn?

With what can you both get drunk from and fuel your car? Ethanol! Don't do both.

With the talk amongst politicians, pundits, and everyday Americans, about what is dubbed as "excessive" profits by oil companies, the word "ethanol" has popped up increasingly more often. Ethanol is a bio-fuel. According to wikipedia, "Ethanol is produced both as a petrochemical, through the hydration of ethylene, and biologically, by fermenting sugars with yeast." A lot of big words there, but basically what it means is that yeast eats sugar, producing a chemical effect, the scientific explanation of which is long, boring, and hard to grasp without your own personal chemistry teacher . This leads to the production of ethanol (used in alcohol, or fuel for these purposes).

This production on ethanol, which is completely renewable, has many people talking about its benefits for fuel, as a replacement, or at the very least, as a compliment to, petroleum (i.e. E85 gasoline), which isn't easily renewable. However, is ethanol the answer to our problems?

Here are two videos showing why ethanol is not now, nor will ever be, the "silver bullet" that kills the dependence-monster of oil for fuel. Most interestingly, both videos tell us that if all the United States' current farm land was converted to corn for the sake of ethanol production, only 12% of our fuel needs would be met...like it or not.

If you are truly interested in learning about what the religion of environmentalism has been preaching as the save-all-end-all in fuel production, watch these:

Rebate and Switch

In a futile attempt to “jump-start” the economy, our legislators, with the help and praise of the media, and the electorate, will vote to take the first step towards a communist state.

Please tell me that I am not the only one who thinks that this “tax rebate,” as it is being called, is nothing more that the redistribution of wealth.  If you make under $3000 a year, you will be eligible for about $300 in a “tax rebate.”  The problem is…people who make $3000 a year don’t pay an effective federal tax rate!

Will Cingular Wireless be sending rebates to non-customers anytime soon?  No, and rightfully so.   A rebate is cash back on money already spent, not free money to one person, paid for by another.  That, my red coated friends, is called communism.  If you want the people making $3000 or less to have more money, tell them to get jobs that pay more than $3000 per year, or, even better, get rid of the payroll tax for this small group of people, so they can keep their money when they earn it, not later in the year after the government has squandered it.

For those of you smart enough to make more than $3000 per year (if you can read, you probably do), a larger payment may be on its way.  If the purpose is to jump-start the economy, which is not in a recession and therefore doesn’t need a jump-start, why not just cut the taxes, permanently, for the people this is supposed to help, instead of offering some quick-fix that will, mark my words, backfire?
Will somebody please comment and reaffirm my faith in my friends, family, and the American people.  Let me not thinks that I be surrounded by a pack-a commie hippies, intent on squashin’ me capitalist freedoms, and taking away me hard earned pence fur dey’re political asprations.

Sorry, I sometimes acquire an Irish accent when I get emotional.

I’m all for giving people back their own money, especially in the form of tax cuts.  As a matter of fact, that forms the basis of my crazy, right-wing ideology.  What I am whole-heartedly against, however, is giving people money from other’s pockets, and other’s earnings, under the guise of a so-called “tax rebates.”  You didn’t earn their money, so you deserve absolutely none of it, you greedy #%*^%@…like it or not.

Way Too Many Acronyms

*I found this gem on top of my fridge, a product of another rant, gathering dust instead of informing and entertaining eager minds, or mind, as it turns out.

It occurred to me yesterday, while sitting in yet another seemingly pointless meeting, that the government’s hands are in just about everything we do.  My co-workers and I were taking one of four HAZMAT (hazardous materials) certification tests when it struck me.  I shouldn't’t be as mad at the undeniably boring instructor as I should be with my own government.  It is because of over regulation that I sat, completely unnecessarily, in a room for ninety minutes (ninety minutes I’ll want back when I sit on my death bed, no doubt) learning about DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations on the transporting and handling of what they deem hazardous (almost everything).

The regulations put forth by the government on my company, and countless others were all written with good intentions, but as it turns out, they often hurt much more than they help.  The most obvious damage is done economically, and for me, emotionally.

I looked around to try and quickly add up the amount of money it takes my company to comply with this particular DOT regulation. The woman giving the meeting has to be paid, and everyone else in the room is getting paid, overtime in some cases.  The tests were about ten pages long, and the packets used to follow along with the instructor were over twenty pages long.  Three meetings were given that day, to over 75 people. My company gives these tests to most of the people who work for us in the U.S., somewhere around 30,000 people.  Everyone who handles, may handle, or may come in contact with, ship, pack, or transport, test, recondition, repair, modify, marks, or prepares hazardous material must comply with this regulation every two years, after any job function change, or anytime the DOT updates or changes the regulations.  All new employees must attend within ninety days of being hired.  All these records must be kept as long as the employee works for the company, and ninety days thereafter.

I just wrote that and I don’t know what it means, so I am assuming that companies need to hire some sort of interpreter also.  Consider the costs associated with the paperwork alone you are talking about tens of thousands of dollars, perhaps more.  Add to that the cost associated with storing that paperwork.

This is the tip of the iceberg my friends.  Each car in our fleet has to have stickers, cages, spill kits, coolers, and be packed with absorbent material.  In our lab our garbage’s have to have special color bags and chemicals all have to have special markings.  The books that explain all these markings must be accessible. The specimens in our lab must be packed a certain way for disposal and shipment, in accordance with not only IDOT but with the CDC (Center for Disease Control), EPA (The Environmental Protection Agency), ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), and IATA (International Air Transport Association).  These specimens, when disposed of (within 120 days after we receive them, according to regulations), must then be transported (not by us, we don’t have the license), for a fee, according to the regulations set by IDOT, the EPA, CDC, ICAO, and IATA, to name a few.

That is all for just a few of the many, many, many, regulations my company has to follow, all with their own certification tests, meetings, paperwork, and costs.  Not to mention, mine is one of hundreds, if not thousands, of companies doing the exact same thing, in a very large, very regulated, country.

I kept thinking, who pays for all this?  Is it my boss?  It is the shareholders?  No.  Our customers pay for it.  All of these extra costs are considered every time prices for our services are set.  With each new tax, or regulation comes a higher price.  So, who are our customers?  Hospitals, doctors and insurance companies mostly.  That’s not a problem.  If anyone can afford it, they can. But who pays their costs?  As it turns out, the very people these regulations were supposed to protect; the patients, and the American people in general.  In other words: you.

I work for the largest independent clinical laboratory in the U.S.  My company employees over 30,000 people, in multiple countries, and tests over 100,000 specimens a night.  That means that 100,000 people, 100,000 lives.  People, who are awaiting results for something as simple as cholesterol test, to results on something life changing, like pregnancy, or even cancer, results.

The worst part about all of this is that nothing will be done about it.  Anyone who tries to change these regulations will be vilified.

“Jobs will be lost, people will be put back in danger!”  I can almost hear the hysterics now.  “We need these regulations to keep big business in check!  We’re protecting the little guy,” they’ll say, no doubt in soft, caring voices.

It doesn’t matter that these regulations do more harm than good, and stifle business, growth, and the over-all economy. Their intentions are pure, and therefore the program is worthy.  You’re never going to get the government to willingly give up its control over people...like it or not.

Useless Guns Okay in D.C.

The Supreme Court has decided to hear a case, the first of its kind in about seventy years, questioning the meaning of the Second Amendment.  For those of you who haven’t read the Constitution (hopefully you’re foreign born, that’s your only excuse), the Amendment in question gives the people (or the State, we’re still confused) the right to bear arms.  More specifically, the Second Amendment reads:

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

That’s it, the whole thing, the nuts and bolts, the frank and beans, the whole enchilada, everything.  For over 200 years, scholars, judges, lawyers, lawmakers, students, and every-day citizens have argued the meaning of those twenty-seven words.

On November 20th, 2007 the Supreme Court agreed to hear Washington D.C. v. Heller, in a lawsuit, upheld by a lower court, in which Heller argues that the law banning handguns, rifles, and shotguns, including those in your own home, infringed on her right to protect herself.  Under the question, “Whether the Second Amendment rights of individuals who are not affiliated with any state-regulated militia, but who wish to keep handguns and other firearms for private use in their homes,” the Court will decide just what the founders meant when they penned the Second Amendment.  We are witnessing history in the making.

Here is how it breaks down; the city of Washington D.C. passed a law in 1976 banning handguns registered after 1976, the registration of new handguns, concealed firearms, and loaded or “readily usable” rifles or shotguns in the home.  What the law did, in effect, was ban firearms outside the home, and makes them completely useless inside the home.  Heller argued that she lived in a dangerous neighborhood (all of D.C. is dangerous, so that doesn’t narrow it down) and thus the law made her unsafe in her home, infringing on her inherent right of self-defense.  Inherent rights are those granted by God, inalienable, and thus free from government intervention and regulation, as written by our founders in the Declaration of Independence.

Legal scholars argue over the language of the Second Amendment, and the language, and its intent, is what will be under scrutiny.  One side says that the word “militia” in the first clause points to a “collective” right, held by the States (as described by the word “state” later in the Amendment), to protect themselves from foreign and domestic enemies by arming their citizens.  Those who argue for that side say that the Second Amendment was written to establish a state’s right to arm its own people for protection from the Federal Government’s over-regulating of “arms,” thus becoming a threat to sovereignty.

The other side argues that the “right of the people” clause points to a “personal” right.  I’m going to go out on a limb and say that our founders proof read the constitution before putting it to a vote.  They probably re-read it a couple of times, as a matter of fact.  As this is probably the case, I think they would have capitalized the word “state” if they meant the government as a whole, a proper noun in need of capitalization, and not the figurative meaning of existence, or “state” of being “free.”  Granted, the word “state,” when referring to one of the fifty currently in the U.S., isn’t always capitalized, nor was it then, but still I would argue that the state, as well as the individual, is guaranteed the right to bear arms under that interpretation.

As this Amendment was written by revolutionaries (literally), it seems that “militia” most likely meant, in the context of the time, any group of people, in any given community, armed and ready to fight.  As the founders well knew, if it wasn’t for those people, we might not have had a United States at the writing of the Bill of Rights.

"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials."

-George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 425-426.

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves...and include all men capable of bearing arms."

-Richard Henry Lee, Additional Letters from the Federal Farmer (1788) at 169.

It is apparent, to lowly old me, that both sides could be at least partially correct.  There is a right to bear arms “privately” and therefore “collectively,” and this right cannot be “infringed” upon.  The infringement clause if my favorite, as this could mean any number of things, and allows the court to err on the side of caution and, without abolition of the Second Amendment, or parts thereof, outlaw all gun-bans in the U.S. by any city or state.

As it turns out, the founding fathers didn’t just write the Constitution and then die, failing to leave behind any explanations of their deeds and/or wishes.  No, as a matter of fact, most of them lived on, making speeches, running for President, and/or writing books.  As such, let us look at what they had to say on the subject:

"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed."

-Thomas Jefferson.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

-Thomas Jefferson, quoting Cesare Beccaria.

"...arms...discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. ...Horrid mischief would ensue were (the law-abiding) deprived the use of them."

-Thomas Paine.

"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."

-Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-8.

"The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun."

-Patrick Henry.

"The Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms."

-Samuel Adams, debates & Proceedings in the Convention of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 86-87.

"Arms in the hands of citizens (may) be used at individual discretion...in private self defense..."

-John Adams, A defense of the Constitutions of the Government of the USA, 471 (1788).

In any case, this ruling, estimated to be out in June, will not put to rest the argument for or against personal firearms, or the power of cities or states to regulate such arms.  The Supreme Court changed the question, as to narrow interpretation, so it won’t be a sweeping ruling either way.  At best it will allow residents of D.C., the murder capital of the United States for years, to protect themselves with firearms in their own homes (how nice of them), although the ruling may extend to other cities with the same unsound laws.  Don’t look for the ruling to do anything more than that…like it or not.

For more information on the literary analysis of the words in the second amendment, read the article “The Unabridged Second Amendment,” by J. Neil Shulman.  http://www.largo.org/literary.html

We're Friends, Lets Have A Baby

Unfortunately for me, and my mornings, Comcast found out I was getting free cable and took away my CNBC Business News Channel.  So, I am forced to watch local news in the morning, no doubt to the detriment of my brain cells, like I was in a third world country, or Canada.

In tabloid fashion, Fox News Chicago ran a story this morning about a custody battle, of sorts.  A man, represented by attorney Jeffery Leving, is suing (?), or at the very least, starting legal work, to insure partial custody of his unborn child.

Apparently this couple, for lack of a better word, thought it would be a great idea to have a child together, but remain friends, and not actually live together, or date, or anything else a normal couple does.  Kinda like goin’ halfsees on a sweet hybrid you can’t, separately, afford, so that you can have it every other weekend, and on even calendar days.  Except instead of a car, it’s a baby!

     The idea came to these “friends” while discussing their separate interest in having a child.  The conversation probably went something like this;

                Man:  “I want a baby.”

                Woman:  “I want a baby.”

                Man:  “I have daddy parts.”

                Woman:  “I have mommy parts.”

                Together:  “That’s all we need!”

Well, go figure; things aren’t working out the way they both had planned.  Apparently this genius idea was just too good for the woman to line up one potential daddy, so she had more than one man, shall we say “make a donation,” just in case this guy was shooting with an empty rifle.  The Chicago Bears were so impressed by this idea that they are now going to have two footballs on the field at all times, doubling their chances for a touchdown!

The two “parent’s” families are getting involved and, apparently, this guy wants a baby’s mama more than anything, so he’s getting the ball rolling on court proceedings and, contingent on a paternity test, should be in parental bliss in no time.

Let us all give a round of applause to these geniuses.  Not only have they circumvented thousands of years of social norms, but they have all but insured a f*#@ked-up childhood for their yet unborn offspring.

******

I’m going to be the first to comment on this blog, as I already know what some of you are going to say:

Hippie/Liberal:  Dude, 50% of all marriages end in divorce man, so this kid, like, probably would have ended up going to two houses for the holidays anyway, bra.

Me:  You’re talking to a parking meter, I’m over here.  Look, it hasn’t been a social norm for thousands of years for one man and one woman to have a baby, after marriage, because of some Zionist/Christian plot to take over the world.  It has been a social norm because society has seen it work!  If you don’t believe me you can find study after study on the effects of single-parent and divorce households on children.

Hippie/Liberal:  You’re really killin’ my buzz, bro.

Me:  Not that you will, but you can look at the 2005 consensus data and see that 70% of first marriages last until one of the spouses dies.  The problem is that the other 30% keep getting remarried, and then divorced, over and over again.  They are the failures, not marriage.

Hippie/Liberal:  Harsh!

Is Home Ownership A Right?

You do not have the right to own a home.  For some of you, that may be a hard concept to believe, but worry not, I am here, making seemingly simple concepts much more difficult to understand, and then once again much easier, through undeniable reasoning and intellect, without a hint of sarcasm.

A housing downturn is occurring in some parts of the United States.  As with all natural economic downturns, the government is more than willing to lend a helping hand, for better or worse.  For those in the media, this is an opportune time to play class warfare, to belittle and denigrate corporations, banks, lenders, and investors, and to scare people into thinking that the economy is tanking.  As I have written before, the sub-prime mortgage “crisis,” as it has been dubbed, is anything but.  The fact that we don’t have a crisis is not stopping many in Washington from taking steps to “help” those affected by this natural housing downturn.  Basically, without going into too much detail, the tax payers may have to "bail-out” rich banks, stupid borrowers, and people who may, or may not have been, swindled by greedy brokers using “predatory lending practices.”

“The nine most terrifying words in the English language are; ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’”

                                                    - Ronal Reagan

Back to my original point.  Once we decree as a nation the right to own a home, we trek down a slippery slope.  As the right to own property is essential to a free nation (it guarantees free speech and freedom from illegal search and seizure), guaranteeing someone the right to buy a home, which is what is being talked about, is dangerous.  Do you have the right to secure a loan?  Do you have the right to a particular interest rate?  Do you have the right to any particular neighborhood?

If the U.S. government auctions off a house I firmly believe that anyone with secured funds should be able to buy that house.  No consideration of race, religion, height, weight, personal hygiene, or political leaning can or should be weighed.  However, I, a private citizen, have the absolute right to enter into a contract (freedom of association) with anyone I wish, with consideration to all, or none, of the above criteria.  It may be despicable to deny someone the access to a contract based on race, but should it be illegal?  If Coca-Cola advertised that it would no longer sell it’s product to Jews, Coca-Cola should be able to do so.  They would be stupid, but punished by the market far harsher than any government agency.  Should we physically arrest those people who choose freely not to enter into a contract with any number of people, for whatever reason(s)?

No reasonable person will deny that a white man’s refusal to sell his property to a person of color, based purely on that person’s race is deplorable.  The adverse is also true.  Those actions must not be tolerated by society, and should be shunned at every opportunity.  I only argue that such an action not be deemed, in essence, illegal.  If I denied the sale of my property to a group known to spew hatred, such as the KKK, or the Neo-Nazi party, would anyone chastise me?  Should this not be my right as the owner of said property?  I think we can all agree that I not only should have that right, but that I may be championed by certain people for my actions.

If we are to live in a free society, we must agree that freedom of association is the cornerstone of democracy and capitalism.  The ability to own property, enter into and out of contracts, and adhering to market forces, without direct government intervention, is the essence of freedom.  The same argument can be made for any number of issues including; school choice, racial quotas,  so called “civil rights,” or hate-crime legislation, to name a few.

Some of the phrases and words used in this argument may be linguistically semantic. To sum up, I may find myself in agreement with someone who says that homeownership is a right, as long as that person prefaces such a statement with these words/beliefs:  you have the right from seizure of your property without due process, but you do not have the right to a loan for the purchase of property, or to enter into a contract with someone who wishes not to enter into a contract with you…like it or not.

The Reign of Che Continues

Forty years ago last month was the anniversary of the death of Ernesto “Che” Guevara.  The legend has long outlived the man; yet, his actions are largely unknown to everyday Americans.  His ardent supporters, along with his most vocal critics, cannot deny the effect this man has had on past, present, and more likely than not, future generations.  What most of us know of this apparent revolutionary is limited to Hollywood interpretations, fad t-shirts, and a possible mention during World History class in high school.
Was he a man standing up for freedom?  Was he merely a passionate, articulate, freedom fighter, caught up in the madness of the times?  I confess, my true knowledge of Che, as he is now known, was inadequate at best, and, as it turns out, negligent at worst.

There are plenty of articles written on the deeds of Che Guevara, the man I have learned was personally responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people, or “enemies” of the revolution, imprisoning many more.   Enemies that included men, women, and children, for crimes ranging from being Christian (as was the case for a young man named Bebo, cousin to famous jazz musician, Paquito D’Rivera), being a perceived threat to the revolution (really bad people like poets and political writers), to homosexuals.  Just by skimming some of these articles you will discover that Che personally ordered the execution of hundreds in La Cabana prison, where Fidel Castro put him in charge.  Amounting to nothing more than a concentration or “re-education” camp, armed guards of La Cabana raped, tortured, and killed many of the people who were unlucky enough to pass through it’s gates.  Unfortunately for the people of Cuba, stories of Che butchering villages of people to show how powerless the government was to stop him tell us that the murders didn’t start in La Cabana.  It would take years of research to chronicle all the horrible deeds this madman accomplished before surrendering and being killed in Bolivia in 1967.

It is proving extremely difficult to write, concisely, the amount of crimes against humanity and freedom perpetrated by this so loved and admired “revolutionary.”  Che’s thirst for power and control over every facet of people’s lives was extraordinary, and the tactics used were downright evil.  His disregard for human life, freedom of choice, freedom of religion, property rights, and any number of, what any descent human being would consider, God-given rights, is chilling to learn about.

Wearing a t-shirt with the image of this man is on par with wearing a t-shirt with the faces of Charles Manson or John Wayne Gacy imprinted on it.  Supporting his regime is just as reckless as support for any number of murderous dictatorships including those of Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot.
It is imperative that we know as much as we can about the madman associated with the overthrow of the Batista Government in Cuba, not for our own personal enrichment, but to combat the lunacy of people who insist on romanticizing a mass murderer.  The list of Hollywood celebrities, political figureheads, and everyday people who conjure up an image of a hero when they speak of Che Guevara is unacceptably long, and, sadly, goes unchallenged in mainstream media.  I implore you to learn more about this man, and to keep your eyes and ears open for the chilling amount of references made of him in mainstream society.

"I don't need proof to execute a man…I only need proof that it's necessary to execute him!"  --Che Guevara

"Hatred as an element of struggle; unbending hatred for the enemy, which pushes a human being beyond his natural limitations, making him into an effective, violent, selective, and cold-blooded killing machine. This is what our soldiers must become …" -Che Guevara

"To send men to the firing squad, judicial proof is unnecessary...These procedures are an archaic bourgeois detail. This is a revolution! And a revolutionary must become a cold killing machine motivated by pure hate. We must create the pedagogy of the The Wall! (El Paredón)"   –Che Guevara

"If the nuclear missiles had remained we would have used them against the very heart of America, including New York City…We will march the path of victory even if it costs millions of atomic victims…We must keep our hatred alive and fan it to paroxysm."  - Che Guevara

$5.6 Billion Budget Approved for Chicago

11-14-07

I have to confess, I really didn't think that the huge tax increase proposed by Mayor Daley would pass, but the liberals in Chicago did what liberals do and approved 53 tax and fee increases and a $5.6 billion budget.  For those who like to do the math, that’s about $2000 for every man, woman, and child whom currently call Chicago home.

I no longer feel sorry for the idiots who still choose to live in that city, especially after they elected Daley to a sixth term.  I do, however, feel sorry for the poorest people in the city, who will be hit the hardest.

Included in the budget, a five cent, city tax increase PER bottle of water, an increase in the beer and wine tax, and a huge increase in property tax, which is the perfect antidote for a collapsing housing market.  People are already worried that their houses aren't worth as much as they were a year ago, with some economists still estimating a 10-20% decrease in prices, and Daley just raised the tax on their property.

Usually cities increase property tax when property is perceived to be worth more, not less.  Ironically, Daley would like to see more public servants, including teachers, municipality workers, and police officers live within city limits, but with an $86 million property tax increase, I doubt if that has been made any easier.

Part of the budget increase will go to hire 75 new police officers but, according to the Chicago Tribune "...that has been pushed back until later in the year as a cost-cutting measure."  Yeah, the police department is a good place to cut costs.  I was just saying to my wife that Chicago has become way too safe.  There is an officer on every corner with nothing to do.

The out-of-control pension, that even an alderman thinks is excessive, will be left alone.  Said Alderman Tom Preckwinkle (4th ward), "It's unclear to me whether the city can continue to afford to have the generous pension system that it has.  When our most reliable source of income [property tax] goes entirely to debt service and pension, I think we're in trouble over the long haul."

Apparently the benefits of supply-side economics (cutting taxes as a way of increasing revenue) have not trickled down to the brains of liberals over the last 40 or so years since J.F.K cut taxes to stir the U.S. economy, with great sucess.  After a May election in which nine new alderman were elected, the biggest lot of new City Council members since 1991, it is hard to say that this is “old guard” Chicago politics at play.  No, what it is happening here is “old guard” liberal politics and policies.

While they claim to be a refuge for the little guy, the middle class, and minorities, they hurt precisely those people with these tax increases and fees like the ones passed in Chicago yesterday.  I hope the people of Chicago will open their eyes and see that decades of liberal rule has not been the answer to thier problems, IT IS THE CAUSE OF THEM..

There is a consequence to these tax hikes that isn’t talked about much, and that is the decrease in revenue to the city’s businesses as customers stay in the suburbs for meals and drinks.  For those who work in the city, you’re S.O.L. …like it or not.

No Thanks to Government Run Health Care

I started writing this after I read an op-ed piece by John Stossel (http://www.townhall.com/columnists/JohnStossel/2007/10/10/medical_competition_works_for_patients).  Not to say this piece was the first to spark my interest in the so-called health care debate.  That passion was ignited when I moved out of my mother’s house and started to pay for my own medical expenses (you wanna take how much out of each paycheck?).

I thought this was a great article as it pertains to health care in America, especially with the constant talk by the Democratic presidential candidates about the "universal” health care coverage they promise to bring in 2009, and the anger expressed by so many citizens over what is considered to be a crisis of unacceptable magnitude (mainly that 40 million people go without health insurance).  If you don’t want to read it, or can’t find it, the column argues that privatization and competition in health coverage benefits the recipient(s) better than any single-payer, government run system would/will.

Like it or not, health insurance is a necessary evil right now.  A lot of people hate having to pay for something they may not use, not to mention the paperwork involved in actually making a claim, and the confusing standards of what will and will not be covered, but the alternative (not having any hedge against medical emergencies) is usually seen as much worse.

Now imagine if the Government, not a private company amongst other competing firms (a situation that promotes price competitiveness, customer satisfaction quotas, and R&D for cheaper and more advanced technologies) was in charge of such a large and important endeavor as guaranteed health coverage for some 300 million Americans, and too many illegal aliens (that is another essay all together).  Can you think of anything the government does in an efficient, cost-effective manor?  Do you hear a lot of people praise Washington’s current health coverage packages, Medicare and Medicaid’s, effectiveness?  Do you feel comfortable getting the Government’s “okay” before you go to the doctor or hospital for testing or surgery, hoping the list for appendectomies is short enough to allow you into the operating room in the next couple of days (this is what happens in Cuba, Canada, and in European counties with single payer systems)?

Not too many people are happy with their health coverage, to be sure, but our current health insurance system is surely better than the proposed alternative, and may be a privy to what we can expect with socialized medicine.   Currently, groups of people pool their resources (voluntarily) in order to share costs over time and afford medical services.  This is basically how socialized medicine works, except that some people pay nothing at all…ever, and still reap the rewards.  Government run health care is heralded as gratis, but as economists like to say; if you think health care is expensive now, wait until it’s free.  The Government doesn’t make money; it takes it, …from you, at a rate they decide is acceptable.  Instead of paying an insurance company, you’d be paying a largely unaccountable government, swayed not by competition, but by polling data, special interest groups, and power.

With exciting new companies like Rediclinic, Take Care Health Clinic, and Minuteclinic popping up, offering affordable medical services without involving the hassles associated with health insurance companies, we will soon see just what private companies can offer us when competition is allowed to flourish.  These places offer a great response to what ales the American people.  For instance, at twenty-six, I really don’t need heath insurance for anything except catastrophic events leading to extended stays at the hospital.  I seldom fall ill, but when I do it isn’t serious.  Unfortunately, the option to buy “catastrophic” insurance is unavailable right now.  I am forced to buy the same package and pay the same premium at work as a seventy-five year old woman who frequents the doctor more often than I change my oil. Come to think of it, I recognize the guy that changes my oil, I couldn’t tell you who my primary physician is.

If insurance companies were allowed to sell their services across State lines, without restriction, a larger pool of people my age would form, making emergency-only insurance more available, feasible and/or affordable, and competition would flourish  (think what cell phone companies did to the communication business).  Those persons could then visit places like Take Care Health Clinics in Walgreen’s for minor medical procedures, (ear-aches, strep-throats, flu shots, etc.) pay $25 or $50, and call it a day, reserving their insurance for more necessary events, all the while cutting overall health-care costs and bringing down prices.

It is important to note, companies whose hands were tied by the government when pay caps were set in the early part of the twentieth century were first to offer health insurance as part of a benefit package.   Because they couldn't offer competitive pay, they had to invent other incentives, i.e. health insurance, to lure sought after employees from their competitors.  Therefore, if you are going to be mad at someone over the heath care “crisis” in America, our own Government Representatives deserve the blunt of the blame.  Let’s “stop the bleeding” (pun intended) and tell the government they have done enough…like it or not.

Subprime Media Crisis Worse Than Subprime Mortgage Crisis

11-13-07

Just if case any of you are worried about the mortgage "crisis" currently gripping the United States, I bothered looking at some statistics.  Apparently our Media are too busy to look at the actual numbers (there's so many, it’s hard).  I'm sure you have heard all the doom and gloom being reported nearly everyday in the main stream media.  I am here to tell you that it's, relatively speaking, crap.

Worry not my lazy friends of the New York Times and the rest of the dinosaur that is the main-stream-media.  Anyone with a computer, time, and interest in the truth can do what you used to do; investigate, keeping those with more power and money in check.  It seems that now, you must be kept in check.

For those who haven't heard of the mortgage problems, go back under the rock and wait for me or someone you trust to come and get you.  For the rest of us; subprime mortgages are mortgages given to people who do not qualify for the best market rate for a variety of reasons (no down payment, bad credit, certain financial situations, etc.).   A lot of these mortgages were given during the large housing boom over the last 5-10 years, and some are defaulting.

I, for one, don’t feel sorry for rich banks that aren't getting paid for a loan they shouldn't have given, or for a person who took a loan out for an amount he/she couldn't afford.  Unfortunately, the squeakiest wheel gets the oil and this wheel is full of really rich lenders and loud liberals (are there any other kind?) using this as an opportunity to tax/fine companies for “predatory” lending practices.   This is a hard constituency to ignore.  People who think they were swindled are the same people who bitched they couldn’t get a loan 10 years ago because of discrimination.

Imagine being a lender:

If you lend somebody the money and that person doesn’t/can’t pay, its because you were a lying broker/banker/lender trying to steal as much money from that person as you could, and if you deny a loan to someone you are TRYING to keeping him/her poor and keeping him/her from access to better neighborhoods and a path to home-ownership.

Good luck with that.

Anyway, these subprime mortgages make up about 20% of FHA mortgages and about 9.3% of those are in default (can’t pay or are 90 days overdue).  Mortgages in general are in default in 5.2% of FHA loans.  (Source: Wall Street Journal, Mortgage Crisis Extends Its Reach pgs. A1, A21, 11-13-07)

Riddle me this; if, as a lender, 90+% of your investments paid off, would you be whining and complaining to Congress or the Federal Reserve Bank for help?  More importantly, would they help you?  Wouldn’t you accept that this is a cost of doing business and a reason why interest is charged on loans?

Ben B., the Fed Chairman, recently lowered the rate at which banks can borrow money, in hopes it would ease the downward spiral afflicting some lenders.  This, all be it, slight bail-out, didn’t do much to stem the tide of default mortgages, but it did give the impression that rich companies and stupid people are free to make the same mistakes in the future without worry of fallout.

The bottom line is this; the entire lending market makes up 5% of the total U.S. market (granted it effects more than that) and well over 90% of the loans are paid in full, and on time.  Here is a link to a map at the Wall Street Journal Online that shows a map of mortgage delinquencies.  See for yourself how serious this crisis is:  http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/retro-MORTGAGE0807.html
